Gareth Southgate has resigned as English manager – our 23 favourite farewells that just went viral on Twitter

Gareth Southgate has resigned as England manager in the wake of England’s 2-1 defeat by Spain at the Euros on Sunday.

By any measure – except Danny Baker’s – it’s been a helluva eight years in charge for Southgate.

The country’s most successful manager in terms of consistent major tournament performance, he also reached the European Championship final in 2021, losing to Italy, and a World Cup semi-final in 2018, when they were beaten by Croatia.

Here’s how the news was reported by Sky Sports.

Here’s a statement from the man himself.

And the farewell from the Football Association.

After 102 games and almost eight years in charge, Gareth Southgate has announced he is to leave his role as manager of the #ThreeLions.

And it prompted no end of responses on Twitter and a whole heap of fond – very fond – farewells. These 23 people surely said it best.

1.

Gareth Southgate was handed the most talented crop of players and all he could manage was the best tournament results the side has had in 50 years and becoming a national icon and making the entire country like the England football team again.

2.

At last Southgate has gone, now we can go back to having a proper manager who doesn’t lose in finals or semi-finals. Like Hoddle or Capello or Sven or Hodgson or Keegan or Maclaren who NEVER lost with England in a final or semi-final.

Gareth is barely cold in his waistcoat and you’re all talking about the next manager, you make me sick

Supporting England before Southgate was miserable, but under him it’s been a joy. Gutted that he wasn’t the man to end the years of hurt with a trophy, but he did in many other ways. When the success comes it will be because of his work, not as a result of his departure https://t.co/bbJWguOKaH

8.

main thing I’d like to say about Gareth Southgate is that he’s the person who made me properly care about football for the first time, and I’m sure there are lots of people out there in a similar boat, who clearly aren’t natural football people but got drawn in thanks to him

9.

What I would say to everyone who has abused Gareth Southgate online is…

Be careful what you wish for.

People have very short memories of how bad it has been. He’s done an excellent job.

10.

Should be easy to replace Southgate. I saw countless people on here who had very strong ideas about how England should have played. They seemed to know everything.

11.

Wishing Gareth Southgate all the very best in the future. He brought pride, respect and a togetherness to @England that we hadn’t seen for a long time. He was close, very close to footballing immmortality and he always did the job with humility, decency and dignity. Thank you,…
