Cypress Hill just made a 1996 joke from The Simpsons a reality – 11 insanely classy reactions

The Simpsons has a spooky track record of predicting the future – from President Trump to a mystery Asian-originated flu that makes a whole town sick. Not Covid-19 exactly, but uncomfortable close to it.

The episode mentions Donald Trump being president before Lisa, and caused a budget crisis that Lisa inherits, seemingly foreshadowing of Trump’s future run for president in 2015. However, the episode was produced during Trump’s 2000 third-party run. pic.twitter.com/WN5Y7dXUy7

Now another of The Simpsons’ gags has come to pass – 28 years after first featuring in an episode. This one isn’t necessarily a prediction so much as it is inspiration, but it’s still really neat, as Marge Simpson would say.

Hip-hop group Cypress Hill appeared in the 1996 episode ‘Homerpalooza’; that’s the one where Homer joins a touring ‘pageant of the transmundane’ (erm, a freak show). There are a lot of musical guest stars throughout the episode, include Cypress Hill.

25 years ago this week, The Simpsons aired the Homerpalooza episode featuring Peter Frampton, Sonic Youth, Cypress Hill and The Smashing Pumpkins. pic.twitter.com/htWssY6PCi

In one scene, a backstage hand announces that the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) has arrived to play back-up to one of the featured artists.

He says: “Come on, people. Somebody ordered the London Symphony Orchestra….possibly while high. Cypress Hill, I’m looking in your direction.”

The band then play some of their iconic track, ‘Insane In the Brain’, with orchestral support.

Cut to this week, where Cypress Hill have performed at the Royal Albert Hall…with the backing of the London Symphony Orchestra.

In a 1996 episode of The Simpsons, the show’s famously prescient writers created a sequence in which Cypress Hill accidentally booked the London Symphony Orchestra for a gig.

On Wednesday, the hip-hop act turned that joke into a reality → https://t.co/892Iv6vZl0 pic.twitter.com/4lfwblCh3k

Journalist Antoine Allen spoke to the band earlier this week before the concert, in which they talked about how The Simpsons gave them the idea for the show.

Cypress Hill, the famed California hip-hop group, played with the London Symphony Orchestra — 28 years after “The Simpsons” dreamed up the collaboration. “We came for the meme,” one fan said. “We stayed for the music.” https://t.co/DKa0ynZHLJ

Years after that classic @TheSimpsons episode we finally got to see the unlikeliest of collaborations between @cypresshill and @londonsymphony at @RoyalAlbertHall . The boys and the LSO did themselves proud. It was sheer genius. I’m ready to do that over again next year pic.twitter.com/AlV60qGwqV
